Herdsman+

The Herdsman+ Use Case (UC2.3) of the Dairy Trial within the IoF2020 Consortium has recently derived additional information from already deployed neck-mounted collar based activity sensors. Collar systems are in common use as a means of detecting oestrus to optimise farm fertility and hence productivity. More recently, the same acceleration-derived signals have been processed to detect the time spent ruminating and eating which give an insight into animal welfare. Herdsman+ has enhanced the value of these collar investments through advanced machine learning, to provide a quantifiable measure of the time period that an individual animal exhibits signs of heat stress, a condition proven to have significant impact on both animal welfare and productivity. The approach offers a cost-effective measure of heat stress, additional data to better inform on welfare based intervention decisions.

Chain Integrated Greenhouse Production

WP3 contacted all Technical Chairs of IoF2020 trials to present possible reuse of IoT components within the project. The Vegetables Trial Technical Chair explained the Use Case leaders the possibility of both contributing and reusing IoT components already catalogued in the project. An example of application is Use Case 4.2 Chain Integrated Greenhouse Production, where interoperability and reuse of components has been carried out. This approach is going to be published soon in the IEEE Internet of Things Journal.

Poultry Chain Management

TEKNIKER has developed a software for the agri-food sector in the context of the European project IoF2020.


The system helps in decision-making to ensure animal health and to improve the quality of the final product. This decision-making derives from the analysis of data, previously collected at various stages of the poultry value chain (farm, handling, transport, and slaughterhouse), and managed through an IoT platform based on FIWARE open source components.


The system considers all the data and extracts information about the quality of the final product via descriptive and predictive analysis
