Programme day 1 - 16 march
Day 1
Experiences from the ground: results & state of the art
Opening speech
13.00 – 13.15
Welcome & Opening plenary Day 1
Day 1: The IoF2020 project coordinator will welcome the participants and explain the day's menu: A series of transversal workshops where you can learn everything that happened in the 33 IoF2020 use cases to the detail. What is the technology used, the issues faced and the corresponding solutions.
Chair: George Beers
Track 1: IoT in farm management systems
13.15 –14.00
1.1: Welfare and ecosystem services through IOT
Digitalization can help to improve productivity, but it can also, or, even better, at the same time, improve the conditions of production, in the field and in the stable. They may help to preserve natural resources, enhance the ecological value of the area, and improve animal welfare. Which examples can pave the way for wider implementation? Which challenges are to be faced in the coming years? Which answers to the increasing political and citizens' demand for “better” agriculture?
Chair: Cristina Micheloni
14.05 - 14.50
1.2: Machinery and interoperability
One of the biggest problems farmers face is the interoperability of farming equipment & sensors due to different digital standards. In this session, we will talk about a possible interoperability solution for poultry and will show you the complexity of Agricultural Data Sharing in the Meat, Dairy & Arable trails.
Chair: Jason Roesbeke
Track 2: IoT and Traceability & certification
13.15 –14.00
2.1: Tracking & tracing (in Livestock)
Join this session to hear all about the tracking of grazing livestock and how this data can be used for various purposes - for many different stakeholders. We will see a demonstration of the solutions developed in IOF2020 and have time to discuss future challenges and opportunities.
Chair: Jarissa Maselyne
14.05 - 14.50
2.2: Quality control
In this session use case representatives from the fruit, meat, and dairy trial will show and discuss how IoT has become the core of their solution and which improvements were made on quality control, transparency, and traceability.
Chair: Kees Lokhorst
Track 3: IoT for efficient use of natural resources
13.15 –14.00
3.1: Efficiency along the value chain
In this session the use cases present how IoT technologies can increase the efficiency of inputs, effort and time at field, storage and transportation level, in order to provide products to the consumers that meet high quality and sustainability standards.
Chair: Evangelos Anastasiou
14.05 - 14.50
3.2: Rational Use of inputs (fertilizers, pesticides, energy, water, energy)
Chair: Peter Paree & Corne' Kempenaar
Track 4: IoT and Green Deal
13.15 –14.00
4.1: Water and climate sensors
The session Water and Climate Sensors will focus on the development of soil sensors, climate sensors, and (near and remote) imagery: what have been the developments in these sensors in the IoF project period, what developments do we expect in the next years in those sensors, which related developments do we see. We also go into the discussion about the type of stakeholders that enhance these techniques and processes.
Chair: Peter Paree
14.05 - 14.50
4.2: Organic farming
Organic farming can profit from IoT solutions as they may facilitate the management of diversity at the field and farm level. But to fulfill organic farmers' needs, technology should take into account not only productivity goals but the broader set of goals organic farming aims to, including biodiversity preservation, natural resources management, and wholistic quality of productions. What is available today and what is in the pipeline for the organic sector?
Chair: Cristina Micheloni

Track 1: IoT in farm management systems
15.15-16.00
1.3: Feed supply management
Join this session to hear all about IoT for feed supply management in different use cases, covering logistics, stock management, and precision feeding and how this can reduce losses on many different levels. We will see demos of the solutions in IOF2020 and have time to discuss future challenges and opportunities.
Chair: Jarissa Maselyne
Track 2: IoT and Traceability & certification
15.15-16.00
2.3: Certification systems (blockchain, etc.)
Authenticity, traceability, safety, and proof of origin, and process type are the basis for quality certification systems. Nowadays several tools are available to facilitate certification bodies' works and strengthen the reliability of the systems. But how much of this innovation is reaching the consumers? Is the certification bodies’ role going to change as a consequence of the availability of digital tools? Which value chains are ready for the change?
Chair: Cristina Micheloni
Track 3: IoT for efficient use of natural resources
15.15-16.00
3.3: Plant health & crop diversification
Since 2020 was declared as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH) this session will showcase how some use cases contributed to this important topic through improving plant protection against pests and diseases, applying technologies for mitigation of climate change and increasing food safety.
Chair: Ekaterina Ukhandeeva
Track 4: IoT and Green Deal
15.15-16.00
4.3: Animal welfare and health
In this session use case representatives from the meat and dairy trial will discuss how their IoT-based solutions improved animal welfare and health and how they can be integrated into daily practice.
